Hughes went 7-6 with a 3.95 ERA in 66 innings of relief work with the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League. This will be Hughes’ first appearance in the American League, having seen action in parts of 5 National League seasons for the Dodgers and Cubs.

The White Sox wrapped up their road trip by taking 3 of 4 from the Tigers. (In 1957, it was the Tigers that took 3 of 4 in this series). As a result, the Sox have moved 6 games ahead of their 1957 pace:
Their lead over the Yankees remains at 3 1/2 games.
The Sox now start a 10 game home-stand, one that opens with 3 games against the Senators. The home-stand will culminate with a big three game set against the 2nd place Yankees.

The Sox open the home-stand by taking 2 of 3 from the Senators.
In game 1, Jim Wilson got roughed up early, giving up 4 runs in 3 2/3 innings, but the White Sox rallied for a 7-5 win, making a winner out of Jack Harshman in relief. Dick Donovan worked the final 2 innings for a save. Sherm Lollar blasted a 3-run homer in the game, his 7th of the year.
Game 2 was a complete game, 3-hit shutout by Bob Keegan. Luis Aparicio went 4 for 5 with 2 runs scored for the Sox as they prevailed 5-0.
The Senators avoided the sweep, winning 6-2 behind a complete game effort from Russ Kemmerer. The Sox scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th to avoid being shutout. Roy Sievers went 4 for 5 with a homer and 3 RBI for Washington.

Game 1: Chicago 4 Boston 2. Billy Pierce (12-13) gives up 2 runs over 7 innings. Gerry Staley works the final 2 innings for his 13th save of the season. Minnie Minoso goes 3 for 4 with a double. Jim Piersall and Frank Malzone each collect a pair of hits in the loss.
Game 2: Chicago 4 Boston 3 11 Innings. Earl Torgeson hits a 3-run homer and Luis Aparicio drives in the winning run with a sac fly in the bottom of the 11th. Gerry Staley worked the 11th inning to get the win (7-2). Dick Donovan gave up 3 runs in 10 innings of work. Billy Klaus went 2 for 4 with a homer and a double in a losing effort.
The White Sox remain 6 games ahead of their 1957 pace, and the now lead the Yankees by 5 1/2 games. The Orioles come to town next for a pair of games.

Sunday, August 25th. The White Sox dominate the Orioles and sweep a doubleheader winning 8 to 1 and 9 to 0.
In game one, Bob Keegan (8-2, 2.87) went the distance, giving up just one unearned run. Sherm Lollar went 3 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI for the Sox. Bob Nieman drove in the lone Orioles run.
In game two, Jack Harshman (12-6, 3.22) went the distance, scattering 5 hits. Larry Doby went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI to lead the Sox. Joe Durham went 2 for 4 in the loss for Baltimore.
The Yankees now come to town for 3 games, trailing the Sox by 7 full games.
