Saturday, May 11.
In Detroit, the Cleveland Indians knocked off the Tigers by a score of 4-3. The game was scoreless through 5 innings when the tribe scored 3 times in the top of the 6th inning. The Tigers answered back with 2 of their own in the bottom half, but Cleveland held the lead for the rest of the game. Dick Donovan got the win with Barry Latman earning a save. Hank Aguirre took the loss for the Tigers.
The Twins missed an opportunity to overtake the Tigers for first place when they lost to the A’s by a score of 5-1. Kansas City scored 3 times in the first and twice in the 5th. Minnesota was held scoreless until the 8th inning when pinch hitter Rich Rollins ripped an RBI double that made it 5-1. Jim Roland took the loss for Minnesota. Ted Bowsfield went the distance for Kansas City.
In Pittsburgh, the Pirates defeated the Cardinals by a score of 3-1. The score was tied 1-1 for most of the game, but Pittsburgh scored twice in the 7th inning to hang the loss on Ray Washburn. Roy Face saved the game for Vern Law who went 8 innings.
The Dodgers pulled into a tie with the Cardinals after a 4-3 victory over the Giants in Los Angeles. Frank Howard’s RBI single with 2 outs in the bottom of the eighth inning was the difference in the game. Ed Roebuck got the win in relief. Jack Fisher took the loss for the Giants. Juan Marichal and Sandy Koufax were the starting pitchers.

Sunday, May 12, 1963: A Jam-packed schedule of 15 games.
Harry Bright’s 2-run triple with two outs in the top of the 6th inning propels the Yankees to a 3-2 victory over the Orioles. Jim Bouton went the distance for the victory. Steve Barber took the loss for Baltimore.
Eddie Bressoud goes 2 for 4 with a homer and 3 RBI to lead the Red Sox to a 6-5 victory over the visting Senators. Earl Wilson went 7 1/3 for the victory and Jack Lamabe finished the game for the save. Bennie Daniels took the loss for Washington. Game 2 of the doubleheader was rained out in the top of the second inning.
The Angels took game one of a doubleheader from the White Sox when Albie Pearson and Billy Moran delivered back-to-back doubles in the top of the 9th inning, producing the only run of the game. Dean Chance outdueled John Buzhardt. In game two, all of the runs were scored in the 5th inning. Nellie Fox delivered the fatal blow with a 3-run homer, leading to a 4-1 win for Chicago. Joe Horlen worked 5 innings for the victory, and Hoyt Wilhelm earned a save with 4 innings of scoreless relief. Bob Turley took the loss for Los Angeles.
The Tigers scored 4 times in the 6th inning to pull away from the Indians for a 6-2 victory. Don Mossi gave up 2 unearned runs in 7 innings for the win. Dick Egan took care of the final 6 outs for a save. Sam McDowell was charged with the loss for Cleveland.
The hard times for the Colt 45s continue, as they fell to the Chicaco Cubs by a score of 9-0. Houston managed only 2 hits off of Bob Buhl. Jimmie Schaffer delivered a grand slam home run for the Cubs. Don Nottebart gave up 6 runs in 5 innings to take the loss.
The Giants led the Dodgers by a score of 4-3 in the 8th inning, but the Dodgers scored 4 times in the bottom of the inning to prevail by a score of 7-4. Junior Gilliam had 2 hits and 3 RBI to lead the Dodgers. Ron Perranoski was credited with the win with Dick Calmus earning a save. Jack Fisher took the loss for San Francisco.
The A’s prevailed over the Twins by a score of 4-3 in 10 innings. Jerry Lumpe’s RBI single scored Manny Jimenez with the go-ahead run. Ray Moore took the loss for Minnesota. Orlando Pena got the win in relief of Dave Wickersham.
The Reds took both games of a doubleheader from the New York Mets at the Polo Grounds. The Reds scored 6 times in the 8th inning of game one to coast to a 12-3 victory. Eddie Kasko had 3 hits and drove in 6 runs to pace the Reds. Bob Purkey got the win while Al Worthington got the save. Galen Cisco gave up 5 runs in 4 1/3 innings and was charged with the loss. Cincinatti took an 8-0 lead in game two, but had to withstand a furious comeback by the Mets to hold on for an 8-7 victory. Jay Hook was charged with the loss, giving up 8 runs in 3 2/3 innings. Jim Owens survived 5 innings to be credited with the win. Dom Zanni worked a perfect 9th inning for a save.
The Braves and Phillies split a twinbill with the Phillies taking game 1 by a score of 4-3, and the Braves taking the second 9-3. The Phillies grabbed a 1-0 lead early in game 1. The Braves briefly grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top of the 7th inning, but the Phillies answered right back with 3 runs of their own for the 4-3 win. Johnny Klippstein got the win in relief of Dallas Green. Hank Fischer took the loss, working in support of Lew Burdette. Milwaukee got homers from Bolling, Aaron, and Mathews in game 2. Ray Culp was charged with the loss. Bob Hendley worked the first 6 innings and got the win with Claude Raymond working the final 3 innings for a save.
The Cardinals collected a pair of one-run victories over the Pirates to close out Sunday’s games. In the first game, Gene Oliver doubled home Ken Boyer with the go-ahead run in the top of the 8th inning. Harvey Haddix took the loss in relief of Joe Gibbon. Harry Fanok gave up 1 run over 3 innings in relief of Ernie Broglio to earn the win. Ron Taylor retired the final 3 batters for a save. In the second game, the Cardinals scored 4 times in the 3rd inning and held on for a 4-3 victory. Ray Sadecki gave up 1 run in 6 innings for the victory. Ed Bauta closed out the game for a save. Earl Francis took the loss for Pittsburgh.

Monday, May 13:
Chuck Hinton blasted a pair of Home Runs to lead the Senators to an 8-4 win over the Red Sox in Boston. Washington turned 3 double plays in support of Don Rudolph with Bennie Daniels getting the save. Gene Conley took the loss for the Red Sox.
In Chicago, Eddie Fisher and the White Sox blanked the Los Angeles Angels by a score of 4-0. The Angels could muster only 3 hits against Fisher. Don Lee kept the Sox off the scoreboard for 5 innings, but they broke through for one in the 6th and 3 in the 7th.
Finally some good news for the locals in Houston. The Colt 45s were victorious, defeating the New York Mets by a score of 3-1. Chris Zachary saved the game for Bob Bruce while Roger Craig took the loss. Howie Goss homered for Houston.

Tuesday, May 14th:
Bob Friend throws a 2-hit shutout as the Pirates knock off the Giants by a score of 3-0. Jack Sanford took the loss for San Francisco. Friend struck out 3 and walked just one. Tom Haller broke up Friend’s no-hit bid with one out in the bottom of the 8th inning. Friend is now 3-3 on the season and he lowered his ERA to 2.78.

Wednesday, May 15th.
The Minnesota Twins take over first place in the American League with a 3-2 victory over the New York Yankees. Camilo Pascual went the distance for Minnesota, improving to 3-2 with a 3.49 ERA.
Meanwhile, Juan Pizarro tossed a one-hit gem as the Chicago White Sox blanked the Detroit Tigers by a score of 9-0. The Sox scored 7 times in the 8th inning to turn a close game into a laugher. Pizarro is now 3-2 with a nifty 1.38 ERA. At 19-12, the Tigers are now one-half game behind the Twins.
With the Cardinals idle because of rain, the Los Angeles Dodgers extended their lead in the National League to one full game with a 4-2 victory over the Phillies. Sandy Koufax went the distance for the Dodgers, striking out 13. He is now 3-2 on the season with a 2.29 ERA.

Thursday, May 16
The Twins and Tigers were idle, so no changes atop the American League Standings.
The Dodgers and Cardinals were both in action in the National League. The Cardinals outslugged the Braves by a score of 9-7. Stan Musial smacked a pair of homers, his 3rd and 4th of the season, to lead the Cardinals. Ed Bauta got the win in relief for St. Louis with Bobby Shantz getting a save. Denny Lemaster took the loss for Milwaukee.
The Dodgers maintain their one game lead with an 8-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Johnny Roseboro and Frank Howard homered for Los Angeles. Ed Roebuck earned the win in relief of Johnny Podres while Don Schwall took the loss for Pittsburgh.

Friday, May 17, 1963
Jim Bouton of the New York Yankees takes a no-hit bid against the Angels into the 9th inning but Albie Pearson spoils it with a leadoff double. Bouton would end up giving up 3 hits and 1 run in the inning, but the Yankees still prevail by a score of 4-1.
The Twins gained another half game on the Tigers by virtue of a 9-7 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Jimmy Hall’s 2-run single in the top of the ninth off Bob Allen broke a 7-7 tie. Bob Allison contributed a pair of 2-run homers for Minnesota. The Twins now lead the Tigers and the White Sox by 1 game in the American League.
The Los Angeles Dodgers remain atop the National League as Bob Miller blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates, scattering 8 hits on the way to a 6-0 win for the Dodgers. Meanwhile, the Cardinals dropped a 6-3 decision to Cincinatti to fall into a tie with the Reds for second place, 2 games behind Los Angeles. Joey Jay worked the first 5 innings for the win, and John Tsitouris went the rest of the way to earn the save. George Altman smacked a pair of homers in defeat for the redbirds. Pete Rose drove in 3 runs for the victors.

Saturday, May 18
The Twins win a wild game against the Cleveland Indians to remain in first place in the American League. The Twins scored twice in the top of the 10th inning to prevail by a score of 13-11. Bob Allison smacked his league-leading 10th homer run of the season for Minnesota. Gene Green smacked his first 2 home runs of the season in the loss for Cleveland.
The White Sox kept pace with the Twins with a 3-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Gary Peters got the win with Steve Barber taking the loss.
The Pirates knocked off the first place Dodgers by a score of 4-3. Roberto Clemente drove in Bill Virdon with 2 outs in the top of the 9th inning to give the Pirates the lead. The Cardinals pulled to within one game of the Dodgers with a 13-1 victory over the Reds. The Cardinals jumped out to a 7-0 lead on Bob Purkey and never looked back.
In a twin-bill, the Tigers and Senators swapped shutouts with Claude Osteen and the Senators winning game one by a score of 6-0. Jim Bunning went the distance in game 2 with the Tigers prevailing by an 8-0 tally.

Sunday, May 19
A whopping seventeen games played on this day, and 4 shutouts where hurled:
In the first game of a doubleheader against the Cubs, Lew Burdette of the Milwaukee Braves throws a 5-hit shutout as Milwaukee prevails by a score of 5-0. Burdette improved to 4-2 on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.80. The Braves took game 2 as well by a score of 10-4.
Whitey Ford blanked the Angels on 3 hits in a 2-0 Yankees victory. Ford moved to 3-5 with a 3.34 ERA. The Yankees swept a doubleheader from Los Angeles to improve to 14-17 on the season.
The Phillies swept a pair of games from the Giants including a 6-0 victory in game one featuring a 3-hit shutout by Cal McLish. McLish dropped his ERA to 1.42 on the season with his 4th win against 2 losses.
The Cardinals improved to 26-12 on the season with a 5-0 win over the Reds. Bob Gibson lowered his ERA to 1.65 with a 5-hit shutout. His record now stands at 4-2.

Bill Freehan hit his first two home runs of the season as the Tigers defeated the Orioles by a score of 6 to 3.
Each team had a player hit a pair of home runs in the Twins 12-5 victory over the Red Sox. Rich Rollins blasted his 3rd and 4th homers for the Twins, Carl Yastrzemski his 4th and 5th for Boston.

Tuesday, May 21.
John Buzhardt took a no-hitter into the 8th inning but Ken Retzer spoiled the bid with a one-out single. The White Sox prevailed by a score of 3-0 with Buzhardt completing the shutout. The win propelled Chicago into first place in the American League. With a record of 24-14, the Sox lead the Twins by one game.
In Los Angeles, Johnny Podres remained unbeaten on the season, as he won his 6th game with a 3-0 victory over the New York Mets. With a record of 29-11, the Dodgers lead the National League by 2 1/2 games over the Cardinals.
At 9-31, the Houston Colt 45s trail the Dodgers by 20 games but on this day, Ken Johnson gave the Houston fans something to cheer about as he twirled a 3-hit shutout of the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. It was Johnson’s second win against 5 losses, but he sports a fine ERA of 2.34 on the season.
Chuck Estrada of the Orioles improved to 2-0 on the season with a 4-hit shutout of the Detroit Tigers. The win moved Baltimore to 20-18 on the season and kept the Orioles 4 games back of the league-leading White Sox.

Wednesday, May 22
Bennie Daniels gets his first win of the season as he blanks the first-place White Sox by a score of 6-0. Jim King and Ken Retzer supported with home runs for the Senators.
The White Sox still hold a 1 game lead over the Twins and Tigers. The Twins fell to the Red Sox by a score of 6-5 and the Tigers defeated the Orioles by a score of 5-2.
In the National league, the Dodgers maintain a 2 1/2 game lead over the Cardinals as both teams were victorious. Ray Washburn blanked the Cubs scattering four hits as the Cards prevailed by a score of 4-0. The Dodgers fell behind to the Mets 3-0 but rallied with 3 runs in both the 7th and 8th innings for a 6-4 victory.
Willie Mays smacked a pair of solo homers for the Giants in a 3-1 victory over the Phillies. At 23-19, the Giants are 7 games back of the Dodgers. Mays leads all of baseball with 16 home runs on the season.
