The White Sox score a run int he first inning, and Ray Herbert holds the A’s scoreless for 8 innings, but a home run by pinch-hitter George Alusik in the 9th inning ties the game at 1, and an RBI Double by Jerry Lumpe later in the inning gives Kansas City a 2-1 lead. Diego Segui (5-1, 1.90) went the distance for the A’s, including a three up, three down 9th inning against the top of the Sox batting order. Herbert dropped to 7- 5 on the season. The loss dropped the Sox to one game behind the Twins in the AL Standings.
The Mets scored 4 times in the 6th inning on their way to a 5-2 victory over the Reds. Tracy Stallard (1-2, 4.18) went the distance, limiting the Reds to just 6 hits. Joey Jay lasted just 5 2/3 innings and dropped to 6-4 on the season. Frank Thomas hit his 3rd homer of the season for New York. Gordy Coleman reached double digits with a solo shot for Cincinatti.
Washington overcame hitting into a triple play in the 6th inning and knocked off the Indians by a score of 8-6. Don Lock (7) and Ed Brinkman (5) homered for the Senators. Joe Azcue and Fred Whitfield each hit their 4th homers of the season for Cleveland. Ron Kline (7) earned the save in support of Jim Coates (2-3, 6.40). Ted Abernathy took the loss for the Indians (0-1, 3.37).
In Los Angeles, today’s game featured a fantastic pitcher’s duel between Larry Jackson (7-4, 2.66) and Don Drysdale (8-6, 2.85). Each hurler went the distance, and the teams combined for only 1 run on 7 hits. The only run of the game came in the 6th inning when Billy Williams doubled in Don Landrum, and the Cubs prevailed by a score of 1-0. The Dodgers remain in first place, but their lead is only a half game against the idle Cardinals.
In Minnesota, the Twins ride a 5-run 4th inning all the way to a 6-4 win over the Angels. Rich Rollins (8) and Bernie Allen (2) homered for Minnesota. Bill Pleis (3) saved the game for Garry Roggenburk (1-2, 5.06). Ken McBride (7-6, 3.06) took the loss for Los Angeles. The Twins hold a 1-game lead over the White Sox.
Lee Maye drilled his 5th homer of the season as the Braves topped the Phillies by a score of 4-1. Denny LeMaster (6-4, 3.06) earned the victory for Milwaukee with a save going to Frank Funk, his first of the season. John Boozer (1-2, 2.80) took the loss for Philadelphia.
In New York, the Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a grand slam by Bill Freehan (3) off Al Downing, but then watched the Yankees score 6 times over the next 3 innings for a 6-4 victory by New York. Downing (2-0, 2.84) survived the rough first inning and went the distance for the win. Mickey Lolich (2-3, 2.63) took the loss for Detroit.
In San Francisco, the Giants took a 2-1 lead into the 9th inning but the Colt 45s scored once in the top of the 9th to tie, and then plated a pair in the top of the 10th for a 4-2 victory. Hal Woodeshick (3) earned a save with the win going to Don McMahon (1-0, 2.74). Bill O’Dell (7-5, 3.59) was charged with the loss in relief of Juan Marichal. Brock Davis (2) homered for Houston. Orlando Cepeda (17) and WIllie Mays (20) went deep for the Giants in defeat.

The Red Sox swept their twin-bill against the Orioles. Game 1 saw Boston jump out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first against Ivan Delock (0-1, 3.68) and hold on for a 3-1 win behind Bill Monbouquette (8-4, 1.67) and Dick Radatz (5th Save). Bob Johnson (2) accounted for the lone Baltimore run with a home run.
The Sox trailed the Orioles by a score of 3-2 after 6 innings in game two. A three-run rally by the Sox in the 7th turned that into a 5-3 victory. Boston got homers from Lou Clinton (5), Frank Malzone (6), Dick Stuart (19) and Gary Geiger (4) in the win. Dave Morehead (6-2, 2.95) got the win with Jack Lamabe (4) earning a save. Stu Miller (2-2, 2.58) took the loss for Baltimore.
In Chicago, the White Sox scored 3 times in the bottom of the 9th inning to force extra innings, but it was the Athletics that prevailed with 2 runs in the top of the 10th inning. Ed Charles (7) and George Alusik (7) homered for Kansas City. John Wyatt earned his first save in support of BIll Fischer (2-2, 3.19). Dave DeBusshere (2-1, 2.65) took the loss for Chicago.
In game 2, Jim Landis (10, 11) homered twice as the Sox prevailed by a score of 4-3. Dave Nicholson (8) also homered for Chicago while Norm Siebern (10) went deep for Kansas City. Hoyt Wilhelm (3-2, 3.00) earned the victory while Ted Bowsfield (6-5, 5.15) was charged with the loss.
In Cincinnati, Charlie Neal opened the game with a walk off Jim Maloney, but Maloney retired the next 27 batters in succession for his second no-hitter of the season. Maloney (8-7, 2.22) fanned 13 New York batters on the day. The Reds scored twice in the 1st and five times in the 5th to provide more than enough offense to support Maloney.
In Game two, the Mets celebrated seeing pitches from someone other than Maloney and knocked off the Reds by a score of 8-4. Norm Sherry (3) and Cliff Cook (1) homered for New York. Roger Craig (6-8, 2.92) earned the win with the loss being charged to Jim O’Toole (8-3, 2.34).
In Cleveland, the Indians swept a pair from the Senators by scores of 5 to 1 and 5 to 0. Mudcat Grant (4-6, 4.30) earned the victory in game 1 over Dave Stenhouse (2-9, 4.77). Dick Donovan (5-5, 2.63) shut out Washington on just 3 hits in game 2 as Don Rudolph (3-6, 4.29) took the loss. Donovan supported his own cause with a home run, his first of the season.
In Los Angeles, the Cubs and Dodgers split their doubleheader. In game 1, the Dodgers tied the game in the bottom of the 8th inning, and neither team would score again until the Cubs pushed 2 runs across in the top of the 13th inning. Los Angeles scored a run in the bottom of the 13th, but came up short with the Cubs prevailing 4-3. Tommy Davis (6,7) homered twice in a losing cause. Andre Rodgers (3) homered for the Cubs. Barney Schultz (1-0, 2.77) got the win with Larry Sherry (0-4, 5.58) taking the loss.
Game 2 went to extra innings as well, with the score tied at 3-3. Chicago scored a pair of runs in the 10th, but the Dodgers stormed back with 3 runs in the bottom of the 10th to salvage a split. Dick Scott (1-0, 10.5) earned the win for Los Angeles with Lindy McDaniel (0-3, 3.00) taking the loss for the Cubs. Ron Santo (16) and Wally Moon (3) homered.
In Minnesota, the Angels scored 4 times in the 3rd inning to propel themselves to a 7-3 victory over the Twins. Hank Foiles smacked his first homer of the season for Los Angeles. Julio Navarro (2) earned the save to back up Dean Chance (3-6, 3.15). Jim Kaat (8-3, 3.02) took the loss for Minnesota and Rich Rollins (9) homered for the Twins.
Lee Stange (1-0, 0.00) twirled a 5-hit shutout in the second game, and Jimmy Hall (8) homered twice as the Twins cruised to an 8-0 victory. Bob Turley (1-5, 3.86) took the loss for Los Angeles. Harmon Killebrew (15) and Bob Allison (15) also homered for Minnesota.
In Milwaukee, the Phillies sweep the doubleheader from the Braves. Cal McLish (7-5, 1.82) shut out Milwaukee on 4 hits in the first game as Philadelphia cruised to a 9-0 victory. Bob Hendley (5-4, 3.86) took the loss for the Braves. Roy Sievers (4) homered for the visitors.
In game 2, Sievers (5) homered again, as did Johnny Callison (7) as the Phillies prevailed by a score of 6-5. Philadelphia pushed 2 runs across in the top of the 9th inning to secure the win. Frank Funk (1-2, 3.18) took the loss for Milwaukee. Denis Menke (5) homered in the loss for the Braves. John Klippstein (4-2, 2.03) earned the win for the Phillies.
In the Bronx, the Yankees won both games against the visiting Tigers by scores of 7-6 and 4-1. In the opener, the Tigers took a 6-5 lead into the 8th inning, but the Yankees scored twice in the bottom of the 8th to take the lead. Hal Reniff (4-2, 2.67) earned the victory with the loss going to Bill Faul (0-5, 6.91). Al Kaline (11), Dick McAuliffe (8), Johnny Blanchard (4), Joe Pepitone (8) and Roger Maris (15) all homered in the game.
Clete Boyer (3) homered in game 2 as Bill Stafford (6-1, 2.45) earned the victory with Bill Kunkel (5) getting a save. Hank Aguirre (6-7, 2.77) took the loss for Detroit.
In San Francisco, the Giants took a pair from the Houston Colt 45s. Bobby Bolin (3-4, 2.54) belted his first homer of the year and was the winning pitcher in game 1 as the Giants prevailed by a score of 3-1. Don Nottebart (2-10, 3.67) took the loss for Houston. In the second game, Gaylord Perry (3-1, 2.43) earned the win with the save going to Jack Sanford (2). Ken Johnson (3-6, 2.44) took the loss for the Colt 45s in the 3-2 San Francisco win.
In St. Louis, the Cardinals took both games from the Pirates by identical 7-2 scores. Carl Sawatski (6), Ken Boyer (14) and Bob Gibson (1) all homered for the Cardinals in game 1. Gibson (8-2, 2.09) got the win over Don Schwall (3-7, 5.91).
Boyer (15) homered again in game 2 with Bill White (11) contributing a long fly as well. Ted Savage (2) homered in the loss for Pittsburgh. Curt Simmons (7-4, 1.96) was the winning pitcher with the loss going to Vern Law (2-4, 2.51).

The Red Sox used 4 homers to knock off the Orioles in a see-saw battle by a score of 6-5. Roman Mejias (4) opened the scoring with a solo homer in the bottom of the first inning. Lou Clinton (6) tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run shot in the 4th inning. In the 6th inning, Eddie Bressoud’s (9) solo shot knotted the score at 5. After a Bob Tillman ground out, Jack Lamabe (2) put Boston ahead for good with a shot over the right field wall. Lamabe (6-1, 2.03) earned the victory, with Dick Radatz (6) earning a save. Dick Hall (2-2, 2.68) took the loss in relief of Mike McCormick.
The Phillies and Reds combined for 22 runs, 26 hits, and 5 errors in a wild game that saw the Phillies prevail by a score of 12 to 10. The Phillies scored 6 times in the first inning, featuring the first of two home runs on the day for Wes Covington (11,12). After a 5-run outburst by the Reds in the 4th inning, the game was all tied up at 8-8. The Reds pulled ahead by a score of 10-9, but Philadelphia scored 3 times in the top of the 9th to secure the victory. Roy Sievers (6) and Ruben Amaro (1) also homered for the Phillies. The Phillies knocked off the Reds by a score of 6-1. Ray Culp (5-7, 4.07) gets the win and Bob Purkey (4-4, 2.78) takes the loss. Roy Sievers went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI to lead the way for Philadelphia. Daryl Spencer drove in the lone run for the Reds.
The Orioles broke a 4-4 tie with 3 runs in the top of the 6th inning to defeat the Indians by a score of 7-4. Jim Gentile (8) went deep for Baltimore to make a winner out of Dave McNally (4-0, 2.29). Wes Stock earned his second save while Barry Latman (0-4, 5.91) took the loss for Cleveland.

The Tigers scored 3 times in the top of the 8th to grab a 5-1 lead and withstood a bottom of the 9th rally by the Red Sox to secure a 5-4 victory. Al Kaline (12) homered for the Tigers, and Dick Stuart (20, 21) took over the major league lead with two home runs for the Sox. Don Mossi (6-0, 1.34) got the win for the Tigers and Bob Heffner (0-1, 4.5) took the loss for Boston.

The Colt 45s pushed across a run in the top of the 10th, but the Cubs plated another pair in the bottom of the 10th for a 4-3 victory. Jim Brewer (2-3, 6.00) was credited with the victory for Chicago while Russ Kemmerer (0-2, 6.40) took the loss for Houston. Carl Warwick (3) homered in a losing effort.

Ed Rakow (6-7, 4.75) got the win with a save going to John Wyatt (2). In game 2, the A’s got homers from Wayne Causey (3), Norm Siebern (12), and Bobby Del Greco (3) in a 6-2 win over Los Angeles. Billy Moran (5) homered for the Angels. Moe Drabowsky (1) saved the game for Diego Segui (6-1, 2.02). Don Lee (2-8, 4.00) took the loss.

In New York, the Phillies built a 4-0 lead, and withstood a 6th inning rally to hold on for a 4-3 win over the Mets. Bobby Wine (4) homered for Philadelphia and Charlie Neal (4) went deep for the Mets. Jack Baldschun saved his 4th game of the year for Cal McLish (8-5, 1.96). Al Jackson (4-9, 4.86) took the loss for New York.
The Dodgers prevailed over the Cardinals by a score of 2-1 in a battle of the top two teams in the National League. The Dodgers scored first on a homer by Moose Skowron (3) in the 2nd inning. Neither team scored again until the 9th inning when the Dodgers added an insurance run on Skowron’s 3rd hit of the game, plating Nate Oliver. The Cardinals scored in the bottom of the 9th, but Sandy Koufax (8-4, 2.17) was able to finish out the game, striking out 7 and walking just one on the day. Curt Simmons (7-5, 1.89) took the loss for St. Louis.

Whitey Ford (7-5, 2.65) blanks the Red Sox as the Yankees knock off the Sox by a score of 4-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. Roger Maris hit his 17th homer of the season for New York. Dave Morehead (6-3, 2.99) took the loss for Boston.
The Yankees scored 3 times in the top of the first in game 2, but the Red Sox battled back for a 6-5 victory. Dick Stuart smacked his major league best 23rd homer for Boston. Gary Geiger went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored for the Red Sox. Roger Maris went 3 for 4 and Harry Bright (3) homered in the loss for New York. Dick Radatz (5-1, 1.53) got the win in relief of Wilbur Wood. Bill Kunkel (0-1, 2.7) took the loss for New York.
The Cubs scored single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings against Bob Friend (8-5, 2.37), and held on for a 2-1 victory over the Pirates. Don Elston earned his first save of the season in support of Dick Ellsworth (7-6, 1.64). Ron Santo and Dick Bertell drove in the Chicago runs. Johnny Logan scored the lone PIttsburgh run on an error in the 5th inning.
The Reds roughed up Bob Bruce (2-13, 6.27), scoring 7 runs over the first 3 innings and holding on for a 10-2 victory over Houston. Brock Davis (4) and Bob Skinner (1) homered in the game. John Tsitouris (1-3, 5.73) went the distance for the victory. Bob Skinner had 3 hits and drove in 4 runs for the Reds. Rusty Staub had 2 hits and drove in the other Colt 45 run.
The White Sox and Indians were tied at 2 after 7 innings, and neither team would score for the next 15 innings! Jerry Kindall led off the bottom half of the 23rd inning with a single off Joe Horlen (2-4, 3.95). Willie Kirkland advanced Kindall to second with a ground out and then Max Alvis put an end to the game with a single into right field that plated Kindall for a 3-2 victory. Jim Grant and Gary Peters were the first of 14 pitchers used in the game. Horlen and Jack Kralick (5-2, 2.38) were the pitchers of record. Willie Tasby had the only homer of the game, his first of the season.
In Kansas City, the A’s took a 6-2 lead into the 9th, but the Tigers made the home fans nervous, scoring a pair of runs off Moe Drabowsky (2) before he closed the door on a 6-4 victory. Orlando Pena (3-7, 4.62) worked 7 innings for the win. Phil Regan (5-5, 4.39) took the loss for Detroit. Dick McCauliffe (10) and Chuck Essigian (3) homered in the game.
Billy Moran doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning as the Angels defeated the Senators by a score of 5-4. Bob Turley (2-5, 3.95) got the win in relief of Ken McBride. Jim Duckworth worked 6 innings for Washington and departed with a 3-1 lead, but the Angels scored 4 times off Ron Kline (1-2, 1.36) over the final 3 innings. Jim King (9) homered for Washington.
Boog Powell scored the eventual winning run in the top of the 11th on a ground-out by Al Smith as the Orioles defeated the Twins by a score of 4-3. Jim Perry and Mike McCormick were the starting pitchers. Dean Stone (3) worked the bottom of the 11th for a save with Stu Miller (3-2, 2.49) getting the win. Ray Moore (1-3, 4.82) took the loss for Minnesota. Jackie Brandt (7) and Ziolo Versalles (2) each homered, each collected 3 hits, and each drove in 3 runs for their teams.
Bob Shaw (3-6, 3.22) outdueled Billy O’Dell (7-7, 3.51) as the Braves topped the Giants by a score of 3-1. All the scoring in this game came from solo homers: Orlando Cepeda (18), Denis Menke (7), Lee Maye (6) and Mack Jones (4).
Ray Culp (6-7, 3.89) went the distance for the Phillies as they edged the Mets by a score of 3-2. Duke Snider cut the lead to one in the bottom of the 9th with his 3rd homer of the season, but Culp was able to finish out the game with no further damage. Don Demeter, Clay Dalrymple and Bobby Wine drove in the runs for Philadelphia. Roger Craig (6-9, 2.96) took the loss, giving up 3 runs over 8 innings of work.
Bob Gibson (9-2, 2.08) did it all for the Cardinals as they toppled the Dodgers by a score of 6-2. In addition to hurling 9 innings and striking out 8 batters, Gibson went 2 for 4 with a homer (2) and 3 runs batted in. Ken Boyer (16) contributed a solo homer of his own. Nick Willhite (0-1, 3.00) went 6 innings and took the loss for the Dodgers. Willhite and Jim Gilliam drove in the runs for Los Angeles.
