Mini season 245
-
A lucky 13 managers recently completed a grueling 144-game schedule in the 245 League, dreamed up by Dev Toth and known as such because each manager’s squad consisted of players selected from three post-expansion teams that won no more than 245 combined games. Managers selected six hitters, three pitchers and one “manager’s choice” from each of their three teams to build their roster.
In addition, usage requirements limited playing time. J0-J2 players were permitted start two out of every three games, J3s were able to start just one game and J4s were limited to the seventh inning or later.
Upon completion of the schedule, the following four teams advanced to the playoffs:
• Copenhagen Red-Whites, managed by Joel Koppenhoefer
• Hoboken Zephyrs, managed by Joel Medvidovich
• 245, managed by Ted Ball
• Motown, managed by Greg MorganIn a thrilling World Series, the Red-Whites defeated the Zephyrs in seven games, coming back from a 1-3 deficit with the help of a no-hitter thrown by Ralph Terry of the 1961 Yankees (Joel’s title-winning squad included players from the 1966 and 1985 Cubs as well as the Yankees).
Standout individual performances from the season included:
• We had a tie for the batting title. Larry Walker of the 2001 Rockies hit .321, a mark matched by…Larry Walker of the 1997 Rockies;
• Joe Morgan of the 1975 Red scored 133 runs, one more than everyone’s favorite player, Barry Bonds of the 2001 Giants;
• 1997 Larry Walker edged 2001 Larry Walker for RBI honors, 120 to 118;
• Mr. Bonds smacked 60 HR (in 572 PA) to take the home run crown, with 1997 Walker finishing second with 53;
• Bob Tewksbury with the 1992 Redbirds and Joe Horlen with the 1968 ChiSox tied for most wins with 24 apiece;
• And the ERA crown went to Pedro Martinez of the 1997 Expos, whose 2.70 mark edged Tewksbury’s 2.80.Thank you to all the managers who participated in 245!
