My 128-team APBA GO double-knockout
-
Have just started a fun solitaire project I have wanted to tackle for a while. A 128-team GTOP tournament. I had hoped to do a triple-knockout, but couldn’t find a proper bracket template for one. So it’s only a double-elimination.
I have seeded 128 GTOP teams in order of season winning percentage… 50 World Series champions first, followed by 49 Pennant Winners, followed by 29 others.
For fun, I have tossed in 1914 Federal League champion Indianapolis as the 128th seed. And the Hoosiers shocked the top-seeded 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 in last night’s tournament opener, as the Bucs grounded into 4 double plays.
Playing an average of one game per day, I hope to be done around June 1st…
Ground Rules:
With the exception of opening round of 128-team tournament, home team will be determined by a coin flip. For opening-round games only, the higher seed is the home team. In Game #1 for the Final Series, the undefeated team will be the home team. If the once-beaten team wins that game, it will then host the Championship game.
In later rounds, every effort must be taken to avoid a re-match of an earlier game. This may mean moving a team to the identical-numbered game on the other bracket.
If two teams do meet for a second time in the tournament, the team which was home for the first meeting will be the road team for the second meeting. (Although this does not apply to Game #1 of the Final Series, as described above.)
Rained out games (ending before 4-1/2 or 5 innings are completed) will be replayed in their entirety, in the same location, using same starting lineups (unless affected by a carry-over injury below). Same pitchers may start the rained out game, provided they pitched no more than four innings. Stats from yet-unofficial rained out games will not count. If an official game is tied at the time of the rainout, it must be replayed in its entirety, but stats from that rained out game will count.
All injuries described as carrying over will carry over, unless injured player/reliever is a J-0. Then he only misses rest of the game in progress. J-1 or J-2 players can miss only one game. J-3 or J-4 players can miss maximum two games.
If a J-2-3-or-4 starting pitcher is injured “for 3+ games” his next start will be pushed back by one day, and the fourth starter must be used in that game.
Teams will use three-man starting rotations, based on Real Life Innings Pitched. Beginning in Game #6, starters can be rotated at discretion of strength (in accordance to rule below).
A J-4 Starting Pitcher may start but must have at least both 15 real-life starts and 75 IP.
If a Starting Pitcher is ejected (or pulled) after facing 8 batters or less, he may start in the next game. If he is ejected (or pulled) after facing 15 batters or less, he may start again after sitting out one full game.
No relief pitcher may ever be used in more than 2 straight games. Pitchers with an asterisk (*) designation only (on his player card) cannot pitch more than six outs in a game. Note: If a relief pitcher (who MUST also have a Starter rating on his player card) goes longer than six outs, he cannot pitch in the next game. If he goes 13 outs or more, he cannot pitch in the next two games. And if he pitches in back-to-back games, he cannot exceed six outs in the second game.
Primary pitchers can be used as pinch-runners, but not as pinch-hitters (unless he has 100+ PA’s that season).
A J-4 position player with fewer than 100 PA’s may never start, unless injuries make it absolutely necessary.
Any .500+ batters may pinch-hit/play no more than once every three games.
Hitters with fewer than 10 PA’s and Pitchers with fewer than 10 IP’s may be used only twice in the tournament (other than as a pinch-runner or zero-option injury necessity).
All games will be played with no DH, optional pitching rules and advanced fielding.
A team’s APBA primary lineup must be used in Games #1 and #3. APBA secondary lineup must be used in Game #2. If a third player is listed at any lineup position, he must start Game #3.
If each team has already had a batter HBP in a game, every subsequent hit-batsman results in a dust-up. Both Pitcher and Batter are ejected.
After the start of the eighth inning, if a runner on second base attempts to steal third with his team ahead by five runs or more, there’s a dust-up. Runner is ejected, as well as a defensive player, which is determined by a dice roll. (1, 2 or 3 = Third Baseman. 4 or 5 = Catcher. 6 = Shortstop.)
After the start of the eighth inning, if a runner on third base attempts to steal home with his team ahead by five runs or more, there’s a dust-up. Runner is ejected, as well as a defensive player, which is determined by a dice roll. (1, 2 or 3 = Catcher. 4 or 5 = Pitcher. 6 = First Baseman.)Seeding for GTOP-128:

@RandySteinman good luck with this. i could’nt find the 67 redsox results how they fare so far?
-
@TSBL The 1967 Red Sox are seeded #95. They lost a marathon heart-breaker to the 2004 Red Sox in the opening round of 64 games. They went deep into extra innings. The 67’s took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 15th, but Mark Bellhorn tied it with a solo HR. Bellhorn then belted another solo HR in the bottom of the 17th. The 04’s won the game 5-4.
In about five days, the '67 Red Sox will face the '05 Astros. Loser will be eliminated. -
@TSBL I’m afraid your '67 Red Sox were eliminated today. They were no match for the '05 Astros, losing 6-1. Boston managed just two hits off Andy Pettitte and two relievers, although one of those hits was Rico Petrocelli’s solo HR in the 5th inning. Burke and Ensberg homered for Houston, who now awaits the loser of the '34 Cardinals versus the '50 Phillies…

@ncord Not really. It’s still early and there are still a lot of teams left (96). I would guess that the eventual champion will likely come from a team that is unbeaten after two games. Those 32 teams only have to win five more games in a row to get to the Final Four, while each of the 64 once-beaten teams will have to win eight straight to get there.
Personally, I’m always happy to see pre-1960 teams do well in my tournaments (maybe because that’s when I was born). So I’m anxious to see how personal favorites like the 1957 Braves, '25 Senators and 1917 White Sox will do. The 1915 Phillies have yet to be scored on, after two games. And these 1914 Indy Hoosiers have been fun to play so far.
After this next series of games is complete, I will post pics of how the brackets stand.
