Tournament Think Tank
-
So the purpose of this board is to start what I will refer to as the “think tank” for tournaments. I think they have huge potential for a lot of enjoyment going forward and wanted to set up this board for users comments /suggestions needed for improvement. Here are my initial thoughts.
My main point of the below experience is the need for improved communication functionality.
So I have attempted to Host a 2018 World Series replay tournament. Pretty Simple right. Only need 2 players…and they only need to play 4-7 games.
Here are the results. I have tried this about 8 times so far and for 8 tournaments launched a total of zero games have been played !!
Of the 8 launches
3 of them the 2 players picked the same team…as you cannot see the teams picked by previous players when picking you team
5 of them…2 players joined…but the never played a game…why?..I think it is to hard to randomly be online at the same time your opposing player is…and there is really no communication tool to contact the other player so it just dies. This did not happen once…it has happened 5 times.
I think we are seeing the same thing in the current outstanding tournaments…they are not getting completed and I think one big reason is the lack of being able to communicate directly with who you want to play.
I know “communication” is not a new topic but I wanted to highlight it again.
Would it make sense to require to provide an email when signing up for the tournament?..that would solve this issue I think and fill a big void in running/completing a tournament.
Other suggestions. When you launch a multi player tourney you will most likely have at least 1 player who never shows up. In this case it would be very useful to be able to remove/replace that player with out effecting the tournaments results that are in place at that time. Currently, if you have a no show you are stuck…you can forfeit their games but that takes away from that tournament experience.

OK. I have been entered in a tournament for 2 weeks. I cannot find who set it up. I have played 1 player the 2 scheduled games. Others entered in the tournament have not been online when I have been. Is there any way to play these tournament games solo?

At this point, the tournament manager can forfeit the games of those who haven’t participated.
Having the option to play a MM instead of forfeiting is an interesting idea.

So I wanted to revisit the Tournament point about facilitating communication for the tournament director. As I mentioned above I tried to launch several tournaments and eventually gave up and lost interest. The successful tournaments on APBAGO are administer off the site with the tournament director having all players contact information and notifying everyone of when/who to play and general communication about the tournament. The lack of this ability when setting up a APBAGO tourney on the site is why in my opinion they almost all fail. The tourney feature can be absolutely fantastic but I lost interest because of all the failed tourneys because of no communication functionality. I just wanted to restate this in the hope it is in the works. Again, I think tournaments on the site have massive potential…but they are DOA without this communication functionality, When signing up for a tournament you should be required to give your email address and cell phone number. In my mind if someone is not willing to do that they are serious about playing in the tournament.
