Custom Teams Question
-
Hey there Jeremy. I think that you should keep the point system as it is. I agree with @anluc7 on how it’s not as fun just running off wins against the MM.
I also don’t think anyone would play a custom team against MM just to drill them into the ground without any competition. I am super excited to see Custom Teams come out! Thanks for all you and you’re team do!–dbacknate

@apba-go-jeremy This isn’t exactly what you asked…ok, it has nothing to do with what you asked. But… with custom teams will I be able to make teams that effectively restrict them to the normally carded roster?
-
@buffalohead Well, I’m not 100% sure I’m going to correctly answer your question, so that makes us even?
Anyway, Custom teams have a min roster size of 25 and a max of 30.
The 30 player roster restriction is mostly there because of cosmetic limitations.
I originally wanted it to be 25 for strategic reasons. I felt forcing people to bring just 25 players to a game would prevent them from loading a team with a player for every circumstance, and that sacrifices would have to be made in order to meet the limit, making for better game play.
John countered that a better number - a more realistic one - would be 30.
I compromised with a 25 min and a 30 max, so managers could start a tournament or w/e and limit roster size to 25 in the tournament rules if they wished.
But, if said managers were to surround my house with pitchforks and torches, we could raise the max higher.
This is a pretty big tangent, and I’m hoping somewhere here I answered your question.
Thanks,

@apba-go-jeremy That is EXACTLY what I want!

@apba-go-jeremy So would custom teams get points for playing non-custom teams? That is similar to a manager managing both teams and rigging the system just for wins. It seems Custom Teams should get points against Custom Teams, GTOP v GTOP Teams, BATS v BATS, and regular season teams v regular season teams. I would be curious to what the feelings of people who play regularly or what would entice new users to continue or if that would be a factor. - Steve

@apba-go-jeremy
I don’t actually play for points, but it is fun to see who has the most experience playing. I just completed a 2017 Braves replay, playing their season schedule. I “stacked” the team by playing a couple of rookies the whole season, and benched a couple of OF in favor of the better carded rookies. I didn’t care about the points, but certainly, using a 4 pitcher rotation and the best hitters on the team for 162 games produced an elevated result. (77 wins versus real world result of 72 wins…lol!) IMHO, it doesn’t matter. -
@apba-go-jeremy one more thought. If doing replays with a custom team that players were just moved to original team that they began the year with, there is no reason to punish a manager with no points for doing so. IMHO they are not stacking a team just trying to play with realism

@apba-go-jeremy
I don’t place any value on my Manager Ratings. I do understand that those who earn a certain amount of points receive store credit, so it could be a problem for APBAGO to be giving away a bunch of teams that could produce revenue.
Maybe you could allow points for stacked teams that play vs. stacked teams but not vs. regular teams. ? Make any busine$$ deci$ion that i$ to your advantage. The puzzle is too difficult for my level. :)
I appreciate that this game is available, those that are providing it, and those who play because it is a fun game that is progressing in its development. -
@sheldonhaun For the record there is no link between Manager Rating and Credits. Manager Rating is supposed to represent skill (more points for a win than a loss) and experience (points for games played). Credits are awarded from the Scouting system and occasionally through tournament wins, Gift Certificates and special events like the Customer Feedback Survey (which I need to finish for next week-ish).
I think I am aligning with the idea that to really exploit the system one would have to play (and throw) so many games the effort is not worth the reward. This means I will probably not change the points system at launch, but will keep a weather eye on the system and take action later if required.
Thanks Sheldon and everyone else for your input!
