Introducing Tournament Functionality
-
Hi everyone!
At some point today we’ll be bringing the servers down to deploy V1.9.2 of APBA GO.
It will have the new Tournament functionality, and I thought I’d introduce it here so you all know what you’re getting into!
First of all, let me say that I’ve been very happy about, and proud of the actions of our tournament managers in the community who have together run many successful tournaments. Their actions influenced the design of the tournament functionality.
Before I describe how they work, it’s important to note that the Tournament functionality you get today is not the final form Tournaments will take. I hope that you will try tournaments and give feedback about what you like and what you think can be improved or added. We are, after all, in this together.
So what will the Tournament game mode let you do?
- Each user can host one tournament at a time.
- Tournament hosts have some ability to manage a tournament; they can forfeit games for players who join a tournament but can’t follow through on the games; and they can reset games for tournament participants who run into technical difficulties and cannot complete a game.
- Users can join as many tournaments as they like. Tournament games are displayed in a new Tournament Games tab on the home screen. Users can communicate in chat to decide which game they want to play, launch the game and get started.
- Tournaments are round robin, can have up to 30 managers, and depending on how many managers are in the tournament, participants can play each other from 2 to 20 times. This should allow for the creative simulation of regular season play (or aspects of it)
- Each tournament has an associated Collection, shared among participants, that does not count towards the three Collection limit for those users who have not purchased the Unlimited Unlock. The Tournament Collection shows standings, stats, etc. for the tournament.
Tournament functionality should make running a tournament easier, but it’s not totally automated in that communication between players and tournament hosts will need to happen much as it does today.
Future development on Tournaments will depend on the feedback we receive over the next couple months as people give them a try. Some ideas in play include but are not limited to:
- two stage tournaments (play a series of games that qualify managers for a final round of play)
- single elimination
- double elimination
- dedicated communication channels for each tournament
- Solitaire Mode and Micro Manager mode tournaments
But in the end, it really comes down to community feedback. Share your thoughts and help us make Tournaments the best they can be!
Thanks and have fun,
Jeremy -
Jeremy, thank you for expanding APBAGO to include the tournament feature. As someone who really enjoys coordinating tournaments, any feature that is added that can make the process more user friendly is a great addition. The first component you are introducing appears to be along the lines of league play, although you refer to it as a tournament. That should really help those users that coordinate leagues. I am really interested in the newer features to come such as the single and double elimination tournaments. The users seem to like these and I look forward to learning more about those. Thanks again for offering additional features. APBAGO is an excellent hobby for those who are deep-rooted in the sport of baseball…Percy Ashcraft.
