This was a neat one… Washington defeated Detroit 8-5… with FIVE triples. The Tigers had 2 of their own, for a total of 7 in the game.
Apparently, the record is 8 for 1 team and 9 for both, so almost!

The Red Sox sweep Pittsburgh, who after a good start have now lost 8 out of 9. Boston stays within 2 games of the 1st place Cubs on the strength of their pitching.

The A’s obliterated the Giants in a 3 game sweep to end the first 1/2 of the season. After just a few series go it looking like anyone’s championship, there is now separation between the top 3 (Chicago, Boston, and Philadelphia) and the rest of the teams.
The league batting average is climbing… up to .225. Interestingly, the offensive performance has been pretty similar for all 8 teams… with 6 of the 8 teams scoring between 72-79 runs so far… the difference has been pitching. The team ERA stats are pretty much the same order as the standings, with Chicago and Boston both sporting team ERAs well under 2 while NY, Detroit and Pittsburgh are all over 3.

The Cubs continue to find ways to win… sweeping the Senators in 3 1 run wins. The Peerless Leader got a Triple to lead off the 9th and scored to beat Walter Johnson 1-0… Pat Moran continued to be clutch and got a 2 out single to drive in the game winner in game 2, and Ed Reulbach came in to to get a double play to preserve a 3-2 win.
The Cubs are now 22-5 and have won 14 in a row.

Eddie Collins keeps the As in contention helping to beat Cleveland 2 out of 3. In game 1 of the series Collins had an RBI triple in the bottom of the 9th, stole home to tie it, then got the game winning hit in the 12th to win. Following with the game winning hit in game 2. Bris Lord tried to make a play and dropped a ball crashing into the wall to allow Grover Land to score and salvage a game for the Indians. the As are 6 back of the 1st place Cubs in 3rd.

The Red Sox use the long ball to take 2 of 3 from the Cubs to end their massive winning streak and keep it a pennant race. Harry Hooper homered in the 1st game and Tris Speaker in the 2nd. Boston is just 2 games behind the 23 - 7 Cubs.

John McCraw’s Giants stay alive with a sweep of the Tigers… they are now back up to .500 and barely alive… behind the Cubs 8 games, but their series with the Chicago looming.
Meanwhile, Connie Mack’s A’s couldn’t take advantage of the Big Trains worse start of the season and lost 2 of 3 to Washington thanks to walk off Triples by Chick Gandil in back to back games (one in the 14th inning). Gandil is hitting .328 with a share of the league leading 8 triples and 2 only to Joe Jackson with 22 RBIs. The As are now 6 back and face Boston for their next series that will make or break both teams
