It took 45 innings for the Cubs to claim first place by beating Connie Mack’s As 2 out of 3 games. Orvie Overall got the win in both extra inning games, including a 22 inning marathon where he pitched 12 scoreless innings to out duel Cy Morgan (who pitched 11 2/3). The win run scored on a wild pitch!

Perfect game! After the Indians went off for 13 runs in the 1st game of the series, George Mullin spins a perfect game in game 2!!!

Through 15 games, 6 of the 8 teams are within 2 games of each other as the Giants recover from a slow start to get in the mix.

Ty Cobb leads the league in hitting at .407, the one bright spot in a miserable start for the Tigers. Joe Jackson leads with 18 RBIs in just 15 games, far and away the most. He’s been knocking in Jack Graney, who has been the big surprise on the leader board with .390 average and 18 runs scored. Honus Wagner has an amazing 7 triples already!

Jack Coombs of the As is the only pitcher so far with 4 wins. Rube Marquard leads in Ks with 24, but is only 2-2 despite giving up only 7 runs (5 earned) in his 4 starts.

looks like series #6 might be big! The Cubs sweep the Pirates… with Pat Moran and Harry Stienfeldt taking over as the hitting stars from Frank Chance and Jake Pfeister throwing another shut out to lower his ERA to 0.68 in 5 starts (he does have a few unearned runs). An even bigger surprise was the Tigers pitching staff got their act together and swept Connie Mack’s As.

With the Cubs Sweep, they take a 2 game lead over Boston into the last series of the 1st half. That set of games really loosened things up, we’ll see if it sticks or not!

Batting Average leaders through 18 games:
    Jack Graney (Cle) .375
    Ty Cobb (Det) .371
    Danny Murphy (Phi). 347
    Joe Jackson (Cle) .328
    Ed Abbaticchio (Pit) .323
    Larry Doyle (NY) .306

This was a neat one… Washington defeated Detroit 8-5… with FIVE triples. The Tigers had 2 of their own, for a total of 7 in the game.

Apparently, the record is 8 for 1 team and 9 for both, so almost!

The Red Sox sweep Pittsburgh, who after a good start have now lost 8 out of 9. Boston stays within 2 games of the 1st place Cubs on the strength of their pitching.

The A’s obliterated the Giants in a 3 game sweep to end the first 1/2 of the season. After just a few series go it looking like anyone’s championship, there is now separation between the top 3 (Chicago, Boston, and Philadelphia) and the rest of the teams.

    image.png

The league batting average is climbing… up to .225. Interestingly, the offensive performance has been pretty similar for all 8 teams… with 6 of the 8 teams scoring between 72-79 runs so far… the difference has been pitching. The team ERA stats are pretty much the same order as the standings, with Chicago and Boston both sporting team ERAs well under 2 while NY, Detroit and Pittsburgh are all over 3.
