Pittsburgh scored all five of their runs in a third-inning explosion ā Bob SKINNER cleared the bases with a two-run double, Bill MAZEROSKI followed with another two-run double, and Al McBEAN ( 9 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 SO, 1 BB, 1 HB, 8 LOB) held on from there.
Detroit clawed back to 5-3 in the eighth on Ty COBBās RBI double and Bobby VEACHās run-scoring single, but MAZEROSKI snuffed the rally with a double play.
McBEAN went the distance, scattering nine hits while the Pirates made the one inning count.

Turning Point: The third inning. Pittsburgh sent eight men to the plate, scored five, and Detroit never recovered.

[Guy] Bush⦠in 1929. He finished the year on top of the league in saves and [games pitched]), and fourth in the league for wins. Also that year, Bush ranked twelfth in the NL [Most Valuable Player Award] Even more impressive, Bush had a streak of eleven straight wins until it was broken by a relief loss on August 12 against the Braves.

Elam VANGILDER threw a complete game no-hitter, facing just 28 batters ā it would have been a perfect game had he not botched a throw to first on a comebacker in the eighth. The Browns jumped on Ron GUIDRY for two first-inning runs thanks to an error-filled circus (Edit: just the Yankees doing Yankee things, gosh I love this game) that loaded the bases, then Ken WILLIAMS added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI single.
GUIDRY did his job on the mound but got zero support ā four Yankee errors doomed any chance of a comeback.
