The 1978 Yankees went from a contender to a .500 team after being swept by the 1951 Yankees in their six game series. The '78 Yankees are now 36-36 while the '51 Yankees move up to 47-37.

The '51 Yankees jumped out to a 9-0 lead in Game One and held off a furious rally by the '78 Yankees for a 9-7 win. Yogi Berra hit two homeruns with four RBI in Game Two for a 7-1 win. Phil Rizzuto went 5-5 in Game Three and scored two runs for a 9-3 win. Game Four featured an epic meltdown by '78 Yankee closer Goose Gossage. After Roy White gave the '78 Yankees a 4-2 lead in the top of the 9th on a pinch hit two-run homer, Gossage committed an error to start the bottom of the 9th, gave up a single, and walked four of the next five batters; thus he walked in all three runs including the walk-off walk to Gene Woodling for a 5-4 win for the '51 Yankees. Jack Kramer scattered six hits for a shutout in a 1-0 win in Game Five. Mickey Mantle drove in three runs in a 4-2 Game Six win to complete the sweep.

Berra is hitting .287 with 17 home runs and 70 RBI. Rizzuto is hitting .276 with 16 stolen bases. Kramer’s shutout in his first start reduced his ERA to 3.05. Vic Raschi is 13-5 with a 2.20 ERA. Ed Lopat is 10-4 with a 2.69 ERA. Allie Reynolds is 6-3 with a 2.87 ERA.

Reggie Jackson hit .394 in the series to raise his average to .330 with 21 home runs, 53 RBI, 53 runs scored, and a 1.008 OPS. Mickey Rivers raised his average to .316 with 20 stolen bases. Graig Nettles raised his average to .289 with 13 home runs. Gossage’s ERA ballooned to 3.60; he is 0-4 with 22 saves. The '78 Yankees will battle with the 51-45 1923 Yankees in the next series.

The '39 Yankees hit an incredible seven solo home runs; the last four were hit in the 9th inning by Dimaggio, Bill Dickey, Joe Gordon, and Tommy Henrich, all back-to-back to turn a 7-6 deficit into a stunning 10-8 win. Game Three, of course, was a pitching duel with Atley Donald pitching a one-hit shutout for a 1-0 win for the '39 Yankees. The 1923 Yankees had a 3-1 lead in their six game series with the 1950 Yankees only to drop the final two games to settle for a split. The '50 Yankees remain 10 games over .500 at 41-31 while the '23 Yankees stay two games over at 58-56.

Offense was plentiful in this series; the winning team in each game scored six or more runs. The '23 Yankees walloped the '50 Yankees in Game One 12-4; Bob Meusel led the way with a double, triple, home run and four RBI. The '50 Yankees pounded back in Game Two with a 17-1 slaughter. That’s when the '23 Yankees rallied to score four runs in the 8th, then add a fifth on Wally Schang’s solo home run in the 9th to take a 5-3 lead. Thanks to an Aaron Ward error, the '50 Yankees came back to score two in the 9th, capped off by a two-out RBI single by Hank Bauer. Jerry Coleman hit a walk-off homer in the 10th to complete a wild 6-5 win to split the series.

The 1932 Yankees beat the 1923 Yankees four games to two in their six game series to move into a tie for third place at 44-22. The '23 Yankees slumped to 68-76 with two more series left to play.

The '32 Yankees opened the series with an 18-4 pounding of the hapless '23 Yankees pitching. Normally hitting the cycle is a difficult feat; Tony Lazzeri and Ben Chapman did it in the same game! Lazzeri went 4-5 with five runs scored and four RBI while Chapman went 5-6 with two triples and seven RBI. His two three-baggers were part of five the team had in this game. After an offensive display like that, it made sense that they were shut out by Waite Hoyt in Game Two 1-0. Hoyt pitched a two-hitter and scored the only run in the game. Offense was back on display in Game Three was the '32 Yankees won a wild 12-10 slugfest in 11 innings. After trailing 4-0 after two innings, they came back with five unanswered runs, including a couple by Babe Ruth. The '23 Yankees responded with four runs in the bottom of the 7th to take an 8-5 lead. Joe Sewell homered in the 8th to trim the deficit to 8-6 and Earle Combs tied the game in the 9th with a two-run single. The two teams exchanged runs in the 10th. Sewell hit his second home run of the day, a three run blast to put the '32 Yankees ahead for good. The homerun capped off a 5-5 day for Sewell who had four RBI. These have been interesting to read. One little question: are you consistent with the home venues? I mean, did the Giants have any games at the Polo Grounds? Did the Tigers play in different stadia? Did the Red Sox play at Huntington Grounds?

    Just curious.

Honestly, the authentic home parks didn’t occur to me at all. APBA Go community, is this a thing? If so, I will keep that in mind when I finally have the World Series between the Greatest National League team versus the Greatest American League team. However, that will be several years away!
