The Tigers jump out to a 6-1 lead and hold on for a 6-4 victory over the Red Sox. Rocky Colavito (5) and Bill Freehan (4) homered for Detroit. Roman Mejias (5) and Dick Stuart (22) went deep for Boston. Mickey Lolich earned his first save of the season for Jim Bunning (8-5, 3.39) while Arnold Earley (0-3, 5.4) took the loss.
Houston scores twice in the top of the first against Larry Jackson and the Cubs, but Chicago scores 10 unanswered runs for a 10-2 victory. Jackson (8-4, 2.65) got the win for Chicago while Dick Drott (0-7, 5.96) was saddled with the loss for the Colt 45s. Ken Hubbs had two hits and drove in 4 runs for Chicago. Jim Campbell went 3 for 3 in the loss for Houston.
The Phillies scored 3 times in the top of the 10th inning for a 6-3 victory over the Reds. Ryne Duren (1-2, 3.97) got his first win of the season while Jim Owens (2-2, 3.52) took the loss. Ruben Amaro went 2 for 5 with 4 RBI for Philadelphia. Gordy Coleman drove in a pair for Cincinnati.
In Cleveland, the Orioles cruised to an 8-3 victory over the Indians. Dick Hall (3-2, 2.53) got the win with Wes Stock (3) earning a save. Dick Donovan (5-6, 3.11) took the loss for Cleveland. Jim Gentile (10) had the only homer of the game.
John Buzhardt (8-2, 1.73) fired a 1-hit shutout as the White Sox blanked the Twins by a score of 2-0. The win pulled the Sox into a virtual tie with the Twins atop the American League. Jim Kaat (8-4, 2.83) took the loss for Minnesota. Zoilo Versalles had the only hit against Buzhardt. Floyd Robinson drove in both Chicago runs.
In Milwaukee, the Pirates prevailed over the Braves by a score of 8-7. Henry Aaron (18) homered for Milwaukee and Willie Stargell (5) went deep for Pittsburgh. Tommie Sisk earned his 5th save in support of Don Schwall (4-7, 5.44). Denny Lemaster (6-5, 3.68) took the loss for the Braves.
Don Lock opened the scoring in the 2nd inning with his 8th homer for Washington, but the rest of the scoring would be done by the Yankees in an 8-1 New York win. Al Downing (3-0, 2.52) was the winning pitcher with Hal Reniff earning his 5th save. Dave Stenhouse (2-10, 5.33) took the loss for the Senators. Tom Tresh (10) and Roger Maris (16) homered for New York.

Home runs by Joe Pepitone (9) and Tony Kubek (4) and a 3-hit shutout by Ralph Terry (6-6, 3.02) lead the Yankees to a 2-0 victory over the Red Sox. Bill Monbouquette (8-5, 1.66) took the loss, giving up 1 run in 6 innings of work.
All the runs were scored in the second inning as the Pirates knocked off the Cubs by a score of 2-1. Johnny Logan and Ron Brand drove in the runs for Pittsburgh. Ernie Banks provided the Chicago run with his 12th homer of the season. Bob Veale worked the final 2 innings for his 1st save. Don Cardwell (6-4, 2.77) worked 5 1/3 innings for the win. Bob Buhl (4-9, 3.54) took the loss for the Cubs.
The Reds scored 5 times in the 5th inning on their way to a 7-3 victory over the Colt 45s. Gordy Coleman drove in 3 runs for Cincinatti. Brock Davis (3) homered for Houston. Early Wynn held the White Sox to just 4 hits in his season debut as the Indians prevailed by a score of 1-0. Willie Kirkland (3) accounted for the Cleveland run with a solo homer in the bottom of the 4th inning. Juan Pizarro (5-4, 1.7) took the loss for the south-siders.
The Tigers grabbed a 1-0 lead on the A’s in the top of the 3rd inning, but Kansas City scored 3 times in the 4th and 4 times in the 5th for a 7-1 victory. Dave Wickersham (2-6, 3.19) got the win while Hank Aguirre (6-8, 3.27) took the loss. Ed Charles (8) homered for the Athletics.
The Angels squandered a 4-0 lead against the Senators as Washington prevailed by a score of 9-4. Ron Kline recorded the final 7 outs for his 9th save. Don Rudolph (4-6, 4.38) got the win with the loss being charged to Dean Chance (3-7, 3.39). Don Lock (9) homered for the Senators while Leon Wagner (11) went deep for the Angels.
Ivan Delock (1-1, 1.65) held the Twins to just 4 hits as the Orioles took game 1 of a doubleheader by a score of 1-0. Jackie Brandt plated Boog Powell with a triple in the 4th inning for the game’s only run. Lee Stange (1-1, 0.45) took the loss for Minnesota.
Game 2 saw the Orioles score 3 times in the 8th inning for a 4-2 victory. Joe Gaines (3) homered for Baltimore, with Robin Roberts (8-3, 2.73) getting the victory. Bill Dailey (0-3, 2.08) took the loss for Minnesota. The pair of losses dropped the Twins into second place in the American League standings, one half game behind the White Sox.

Harvey Kuenn went 4 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored for the Giants.
In New York, the Phillies built a 4-0 lead, and withstood a 6th inning rally to hold on for a 4-3 win over the Mets. Bobby Wine (4) homered for Philadelphia and Charlie Neal (4) went deep for the Mets. Jack Baldschun saved his 4th game of the year for Cal McLish (8-5, 1.96). Al Jackson (4-9, 4.86) took the loss for New York.
The Dodgers prevailed over the Cardinals by a score of 2-1 in a battle of the top two teams in the National League. The Dodgers scored first on a homer by Moose Skowron (3) in the 2nd inning. Neither team scored again until the 9th inning when the Dodgers added an insurance run on Skowron’s 3rd hit of the game, plating Nate Oliver. The Cardinals scored in the bottom of the 9th, but Sandy Koufax (8-4, 2.17) was able to finish out the game, striking out 7 and walking just one on the day. Curt Simmons (7-5, 1.89) took the loss for St. Louis.

June 22 Highlights:
Whitey Ford (7-5, 2.65) blanks the Red Sox as the Yankees knock off the Sox by a score of 4-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. Roger Maris hit his 17th homer of the season for New York. Dave Morehead (6-3, 2.99) took the loss for Boston.
The Yankees scored 3 times in the top of the first in game 2, but the Red Sox battled back for a 6-5 victory. Dick Stuart smacked his major league best 23rd homer for Boston. Gary Geiger went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored for the Red Sox. Roger Maris went 3 for 4 and Harry Bright (3) homered in the loss for New York. Dick Radatz (5-1, 1.53) got the win in relief of Wilbur Wood. Bill Kunkel (0-1, 2.7) took the loss for New York.
The Cubs scored single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings against Bob Friend (8-5, 2.37), and held on for a 2-1 victory over the Pirates. Don Elston earned his first save of the season in support of Dick Ellsworth (7-6, 1.64). Ron Santo and Dick Bertell drove in the Chicago runs. Johnny Logan scored the lone PIttsburgh run on an error in the 5th inning.
The Reds roughed up Bob Bruce (2-13, 6.27), scoring 7 runs over the first 3 innings and holding on for a 10-2 victory over Houston. Brock Davis (4) and Bob Skinner (1) homered in the game. John Tsitouris (1-3, 5.73) went the distance for the victory. Bob Skinner had 3 hits and drove in 4 runs for the Reds. Rusty Staub had 2 hits and drove in the other Colt 45 run.
The White Sox and Indians were tied at 2 after 7 innings, and neither team would score for the next 15 innings! Jerry Kindall led off the bottom half of the 23rd inning with a single off Joe Horlen (2-4, 3.95). Willie Kirkland advanced Kindall to second with a ground out and then Max Alvis put an end to the game with a single into right field that plated Kindall for a 3-2 victory. Jim Grant and Gary Peters were the first of 14 pitchers used in the game. Horlen and Jack Kralick (5-2, 2.38) were the pitchers of record. Willie Tasby had the only homer of the game, his first of the season.
In Kansas City, the A’s took a 6-2 lead into the 9th, but the Tigers made the home fans nervous, scoring a pair of runs off Moe Drabowsky (2) before he closed the door on a 6-4 victory. Orlando Pena (3-7, 4.62) worked 7 innings for the win. Phil Regan (5-5, 4.39) took the loss for Detroit. Dick McCauliffe (10) and Chuck Essigian (3) homered in the game.
Billy Moran doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning as the Angels defeated the Senators by a score of 5-4. Bob Turley (2-5, 3.95) got the win in relief of Ken McBride. Jim Duckworth worked 6 innings for Washington and departed with a 3-1 lead, but the Angels scored 4 times off Ron Kline (1-2, 1.36) over the final 3 innings. Jim King (9) homered for Washington.
Boog Powell scored the eventual winning run in the top of the 11th on a ground-out by Al Smith as the Orioles defeated the Twins by a score of 4-3. Jim Perry and Mike McCormick were the starting pitchers. Dean Stone (3) worked the bottom of the 11th for a save with Stu Miller (3-2, 2.49) getting the win. Ray Moore (1-3, 4.82) took the loss for Minnesota. Jackie Brandt (7) and Ziolo Versalles (2) each homered, each collected 3 hits, and each drove in 3 runs for their teams.
Bob Shaw (3-6, 3.22) outdueled Billy O’Dell (7-7, 3.51) as the Braves topped the Giants by a score of 3-1. All the scoring in this game came from solo homers: Orlando Cepeda (18), Denis Menke (7), Lee Maye (6) and Mack Jones (4).
Ray Culp (6-7, 3.89) went the distance for the Phillies as they edged the Mets by a score of 3-2. Duke Snider cut the lead to one in the bottom of the 9th with his 3rd homer of the season, but Culp was able to finish out the game with no further damage. Don Demeter, Clay Dalrymple and Bobby Wine drove in the runs for Philadelphia. Roger Craig (6-9, 2.96) took the loss, giving up 3 runs over 8 innings of work.
Bob Gibson (9-2, 2.08) did it all for the Cardinals as they toppled the Dodgers by a score of 6-2. In addition to hurling 9 innings and striking out 8 batters, Gibson went 2 for 4 with a homer (2) and 3 runs batted in. Ken Boyer (16) contributed a solo homer of his own. Nick Willhite (0-1, 3.00) went 6 innings and took the loss for the Dodgers. Willhite and Jim Gilliam drove in the runs for Los Angeles.

The Cubs pushed a run across in the bottom of the 12th inning to send the Phillies to a 5-4 defeat. Lindy McDaniel (1-3, 2.73) got the win with Harvey Haddix (3-2, 3.58) taking the loss. Billy Williams (10) had the games only homer.
The Reds scored 3 times in the bottom of the 8th to pull away for a 7-4 victory over the Colt 45s in game 1 of a doubleheader. Bill Henry earned his 2nd save of the year in support of Dom Zanni (1-0, 3.86). Russ Kemmerer (0-3, 7.42) took the loss for Houston. Ernie Fazio (1) and Tommy Harper (3) homered.

Chris Zachary (0-2, 5.49) took the loss for the Colt 45s. Carl Warwick (4) homered for the visitors, while three Reds went deep: Leo Cardenas (6), Pete Rose (5) and Gordy Coleman (10).
In Cleveland, the White Sox scored two quick runs in the top of the first inning, but the offense would dry up as The Indians prevailed by a score of 3-2 in the first game of a twin-bill. Jack Kralick (6-2, 2.33) got the win for Cleveland while Hoyt Wilhelm (3-3, 2.95) took the loss. Dave Nicholson (9) homered for the Sox while Kralick (3) and Max Alvis (8) went deep for Cleveland.
In game two, the White Sox pushed a run across in the top of the first again, and once again, they failed to score in the game as the Tribe triumphed by a score of 2-1. Barry Latman homered for the second time this season for Cleveland and earned the win (1-4, 5.23). Dave DeBusschere (2-2, 2.70) took the loss for Chicago.
George Alusik launched a pair of homers (8,9) for Kansas City as the A’s tamed the Tigers by a score of 3-1. John Wyatt (3) saved the game in support of Moe Drabowsky (1-1, 4.43). Micky Lolich (2-4, 3.14) took the loss for Detroit.

In game 1 of a doubleheader, the Indians and Red Sox were tied at 1 through 11 innings. The Tribe pushed 2 runs across in the top of the 12th inning on solo homers by Fred Whitfield (5) and Joe Azcue (6). The Sox answered back in the bottom of the 12th with a 2-run homer by Lou Clinton (7). With one out, Eddie Bressoud tripled. Ted Abernathy (0-2, 3.80) intentionally walked Bob Tillman to get to the pitchers’ spot, occupied by Dick Radatz (6-1, 1.71). Radatz grounded to second, and Miguel De La Hoz started a potential inning-ending double play, but Radatz was able to leg out the throw from Jerry Kindall, allowing Bressoud to score the winning run.
Game two saw another one-run victory for Boston as they scored single tallies in the 3rd and 5th innings to knock off the Tribe by a score of 2-1. Jerry Kindall (1) homered for Cleveland while Earl WIlson (2) went deep for Boston. Wilson (3-7, 4.28) got the win while Sam McDowell (1-10, 5.79) took the loss. Dick Radatz (7) earned a save.
Ron Hansen singled home Tommy McCraw with the deciding run in the 7th inning as the White Sox defeated the Yankees by a score of 2-1. Juan Pizarro (6-4, 1.62) went the distance for Chicago for the win. Ralph Terry (6-7, 2.99) gave up just 2 runs over 7 innings of work, but was charged with the loss.

The Colt 45s knocked off the Braves by a score of 9-8. Jim Campbell (4) and Johnny Weekly (1) homered for Houston while Eddie Mathews (15) and Lee Maye (7) went yard for Milwaukee. Hal Woodeshick (3-0, 1.44) threw 4 innings of relief for the win. Bob Hendley (5-5, 4.26) took the loss in relief for Milwaukee.
The Mets pushed across a run on a sac fly by Ron Hunt in the bottom of the 8th inning to break a 2-2 tie, and sent the Cubs to a 3-2 defeat. Al Jackson (5-9, 4.63) went the distance for New York, striking out 5 and walking just one. Jack Warner (0-1, 9.00) took the loss in his season debut for Chicago in relief of Bob Buhl.
Don Clendenon’s 2-run homer (8) in the 6th inning proved to the the deciding blow in a 2-1 victory for the Pirates over the Phillies. Tommie Sisk (6) earned a save in support of Bob Friend (9-5, 2.31). Cal McLish (8-6, 2.02) took the loss for Philadelphia.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 6-1 lead against the Giants and held on for a 7-5 victory. Ken Boyer (20) and Stan Musial (11) homered for St. Louis. Jose Pagan (3), Willie McCovey (18) and Felipe Alou (8) all homered for San Francisco. Ron Taylor (4) earned a save with the win going to Curt Simmons(8-5, 1.87). Billy O’Dell (7-8, 3.76) took the loss for the Giants.

Wilbur Wood (1-2, 5.23) scatters 8 hits as the Red Sox blank the Indians by a score of 7-0. Barry Latman (1-5, 5.55) took the loss for Cleveland. Carl Yastrezmski went 4 for 5 with 2 RBI for Boston.
Joe Pepitone (11,12) homered twice for the Yankees as they held off the White Sox for a 4-3 victory. Hal Reniff (6) earned a save in support of Jim Bouton (10-3, 1.78). Ray Herbert (7-6, 2.91) took the loss for Chicago. Roger Maris (19) and Floyd Robinson (6) also homered in the game. With the win the Yankees have moved past the White Sox into second place in the American League. They are a game and a half behind the first place Twins.
In Kansas City, the Senators toppled the Athletics by a score of 5-3. Bennie Daniels (2-3, 2.94) went 6 innings for the victory with Jim Coates (2) hurling 3 scoreless innings for a save. Dave Wickersham (2-7, 3.4) took the loss for Kansas City. Jim King (10) homered for Washington while George Alusik (10) went deep for the A’s.
The Twins continue to pace the American league with a 7-3 victory over the Tigers. Jim Perry (7-1, 3.01) went the distance for Minnesota. Phil Regan (5-6, 5.12) gave up 5 runs in 6 innings for the loss. Jimmie Hall (12) homered for Minnesota and Bill Freehan (5) did the same for Detroit.
