Weird Earned Run Tabulation
-
Just had a minor error in a game’s Earned Run tabulation. This happens from time to time, in an inning where there are potentially confusing errors or passed balls. But in this case, there’s no real reason for there to be a mistake.
Down 7-2 to Seattle, Colorado’s Jeremy Affeldt came in to pitch the bottom of the 8th:
Cameron grounded out to 1B.
Guillen singled.
Bell hit a two-run HR.
At that point, Affeldt was relieved by Taylor Buchholz, who retired two straight batters to end the inning.
But when the final box score appeared, the two runs given up by Affeldt are shown as being unearned. The ‘Game History’ box score shows the same. Not sure why.

I wonder if Guillen’s single was a 53 (vs fielding 2) and the system processed it, mistakenly, as an error instead of a hit. Just throwing it against the wall to see if anything sticks. Even in my scenario, one of the runs should still be earned. Did you submit this for review by the tech team?

@HOFfridge Honestly don’t recall how Guillen singled. But '07 Colorado’s defense was a Fielding One throughout the game. So I don’t think Guillen rolling a 53 would have mattered.
Yes, sending to the GO Support team. This was a weird one. -
Same type of strange thing has happened again. Oddly enough, in another game involving the 2001 Mariners…
Aaron Sele (B-Z) takes a 1-0 lead into the top of the 7th against the 2002 A’s.
- Dave Justice grounds out.
- Mark Ellis grounds out.
- Terrence Long singles.
- Pinch-hitter Cody McKay doubles home Long.
- Pinch-hitter Ray Durham strikes out.
Definitely an earned run. Yet, as the top of the 7th inning ends, Sele is upgraded to A (when he should remain a B)…
Even the final box score shows Sele as having allowed no earned runs…
Will file details to GO Support…

Another example. 1922 Giants score four runs, all earned, against 1916 Dodgers’ SP Jeff Pfeffer (AC-Z).
1st inning: Double, groundout, sac fly
2nd inning: Groundout, single, 2-run HR
7th inning: Groundout, double, tripleYet, game box score shows Pfeffer as having allowed only three earned runs…
Doesn’t seem to be any common theme to them.
Dodgers did not commit any errors and there were no passed balls in the game.
Will send Game Play summary to GO Support.
