CARD Grades ??

Even after 40 years Ill never get the card grades. Two pitchers on almost identically bad teams in 1996

Belcher (KC 75-86) 15-11, 3.92, 238 IP, 2.6 BB/I =BZ
Navarro (CHC 76-86) 15-12 3.92, 237 IP 2.7 BB/I =CZ

You cant get more identical. Exact same team wins, exact same IP, Exact same ERA, same BB/I but one gets a CZ one gets a BZ

Someone able to shed light on grading system? these are not playoff teams or anything, I even checked the teams offensive runs scored (772 and 756) they are comparable so not like one needs better grade because hitting on team is bad?

@TSBL What about fielding grades? Does 1 team have chart 3 (35 or less) with their most used lineups?

@TSBL A lot of the grade is based on the run-scoring environment of the league. AL ERA (4.99) was much higher than NL (4.21) so Belcher’s 3.92 was worth more. When comparing players from different leagues (even if they are the same year), ERA+ is worth a look (though it also factors in park effects). Belcher’s is 126, Navarro’s 110, 100 being average. A more straight-up comparison: Belcher’s ERA represents 79% of League average; Navarro, 93%.

another odd one
Alan Embree 1997 graded AZZ but has 20 walks in 46 innings for 3.9 BB/I should not even have one Z !!

maybe because on Atlanta?

@TSBL That’s a genuine error. With a walk rate of 10.5%, Embree is higher than the 1997 National League average of 8.9% and was about two walks away from getting a W.
