Tool for viewing specific rosters for a game (back to 2006)
-
With the release of Custom Teams (awesome stuff!), we now have the ability to replay seasons with the roster just as they existed on the day the game was played. In order to make it easier to find out what that roster is, I’ve created a Google Sheets spreadsheet to to look that up. You can access that sheet here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RhRsOn4jeQ48Y_m9PIimGKfDjFC1iLjs-N7xGtZ3mo0/edit?usp=sharing
The sheet pulls data from the MLB Gameday system, so unfortunately we only have rosters available back to 2006.
To use the sheet, simply pick the year, month, day, away team, and home team from the dropdown menus. If you choose a game that doesn’t exist, you’ll get an #NA error, but you won’t break anything.
For the most part, the players listed were the players available for the game. However, you will occasionally see more than 25 players listed on a roster. Based on my understanding of the process, I believe this is because a player put on the DL or sent down or released prior to the game would not be removed from the roster file for that game, but the player who replaced him would be added to the file. Suffice to say though that there were not any players available for the game who are not listed (I think).
If you want to be more precise, you can try the MLB.com transaction pages to see what moves were made that day. Just modify this link for your team and month: http://m.braves.mlb.com/roster/transactions/2011/04 though I will say that the data is not very complete prior to 2009.
If you have any questions about the spreadsheet, feel free to ask. If I can figure out how to get more games prior to 2006, I will add it in.
